Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados is a sophisticated tropical beauty steeped in English heritage and enlivened by the warm Bajan culture. In the capital of Bridgetown, the well-preserved Old Town and historic Garrison district represent an impressive British legacy designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island’s lush interior is largely covered in forest and fields of sugar cane, a source of prized rums and great colonial fortunes. Attractions include restored great houses, a wildlife preserve, the underground formations of Harrison’s Cave, first-rate golfing and some 60 beaches of incredible variety. To the west are white sands and gentle azure waters. The south is the center for both nightlife and reef snorkeling, while the high cliffs of the southeast form a stunning backdrop for windsurfing. The windswept east coast, with its pounding Atlantic surf, is Barbados at its most rugged and wild.

■Santa Cruz de Tenerife,Canary Islands

Just 130 miles from Africa, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was founded in 1494, becoming a key port on the trade route between Europe and the Americas. Framed by Baroque churches and historic buildings, charming plazas dot the city, including the central Plaza de España. In contrast, the modern Torres de Santa Cruz are the tallest twin towers in Spain, and the futuristic Auditorio de Tenerife sits majestically on the waterfront. Calle de la Noria bustles with Canarian style and offers shopping, entertainment and cuisine. Outside of town, the rugged laurel forest of Anaga Rural Park has marked hiking trails, while the UNESCO World Heritage site of Teide National Park displays the island’s volcanic origins and the highest summit in Spain. Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is home to many of Tenerife’s oldest buildings. The island also has spectacular beaches and is famous for mild weather.

■Lanzarote,Canary Islands,Spain

The bustling capital of Arrecife is named for the black reefs behind which boats once hid from pirates. The dark, barren hills and vast craters of the island’s spectacular volcanic terrain can be explored by bus or 4x4, on foot or by camel, and nearby Timanfaya National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The island is also renowned for its stellar beaches. Manmade attractions include Castillo de San Gabriel, on a tiny islet facing town, and Castillo de San Jose, home to the contemporary art museum. Arrecife surrounds a natural lagoon known as Charco de San Ginés, lined with charming cottages and the pretty Church of San Ginés. A few miles north of Arrecife is the home of artist César Manrique, the island’s favorite son. Manrique left a lasting impact on the aesthetics of Lanzarote, from the absence of high-rise hotels to the trademark whitewashed houses with green or blue woodwork.

■Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal’s capital on the Atlantic Ocean is comprised of several key districts built on seven hills. A good place to begin is the historic Alfama district, a maze of medieval streets and alleyways leading to a hilltop on which you will find the Castelo de São Jorge. One of Lisbon’s most popular attractions, the castle provides sweeping views over the city. Descend to the riverfront Baixa district to enjoy its shopping, restaurants and neoclassical architecture. The Bélem district is home to a pair of UNESCO World Heritage sites: Bélem Tower, celebrating the Age of Discovery, and Jerónimos Monastery, a prime example of ornate Manueline architecture. If time permits, the charming villages of Sintra and Cascais are only a short distance away, and many choose to make the pilgrimage from Lisbon to Fátima, where apparitions of the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917.
